This style of a Starfleet uniform made its first appearance in Star Trek: First Contact. It is comprised of a full-length black jumpsuit with gray quilted shoulders, black elastic stirrups at the feet, a form fitting elastic waistband sewn inside with attached loops for ‘away team’ gear, a Velcro patch on the left breast for a commbadge, and a Sciences Blue division stripe at the cuff. The jumpsuit zips up in the front.
A separate long-sleeved undershirt matching the division cuff color is part of this jumpsuit. It zips up in the front and has very slight discoloration under the arms.
The Starfleet uniforms introduced in the 2370s were designed by veteran costume designer Robert Blackman, based upon William Ware Theiss’s designs from The Original Series. He worked on the last five seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation and the entire run of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise. He also worked on the movie Star Trek: Generations (1994). Brought in on recommendation of colleague and friend Durinda Rice Wood, who opted to leave the franchise, his costume work for Star Trek has earned him two Emmy Awards, supplemented with an additional eight nominations.
Uniforms like this were also seen in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine after the episode “Rapture”, in late seasons of Star Trek: Voyager, and Star Trek: Insurrection but this one was featured in Star Trek: Nemesis.
A sewn in tag in both items denotes wear by “Doug Wax” and a costumer’s tag restates this. Actor Doug Wax can been seen on the bridge of the Enterprise. Find out more about the actor on IMDB.com.
